More and more members are looking at the use of external research as a strategic tool as opposed to a purely tactical one. In fact, almost 40% of ESIX Benchmark Survey respondents are now using external research firms for gathering competitive or market intelligence, and some are using them specifically for their succession planning process. We will be joined by a panel of four member-recommended research consultants who have been assisting clients with such projects as succession plans, talent intelligence, and salary benchmarking reports. This panel will discuss how we can elevate the use of external research to both take our function upstream, and to make a greater strategic impact on our organizations.

11:30 am Member Case Study: Gwen DeFilippi, The United States Air Force
Gwen DeFilippi has a huge job as the Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff for Manpower, Personnel & Services at the US Air Force. She and her team are modernizing their IT systems and implementing data visualization tools, as well as re-engineering how they manage officers and their civilian hiring process. All this while managing an operation that serves almost 700,000 people around the world, plus their families and retirees! As to their leadership recruiting model, one of the many areas they are working on is a huge Air Force-wide initiative to reinvigorate efforts around the diversity of the entire force, from the leadership on down. Gwen will share her learnings on this program so far, as well as her experiences with how they are using data analytics in executive management.

1:15 pm The Gender Gap at the Top: Working Mother Research Institute
Although it is unlikely that anyone in our world will be surprised to know there is a gender gap at the leadership level, this new study unearths some surprising facts about motivation, especially for ‘multicultural women’. So much so that the group behind it is preparing to drill down even further on this topic over the coming year. We will hear more about the study and the future work to come, as well as a number of other topics from Deborah Munster, Executive Director of Diversity Best Practices, a division of Working Mother Media.
